Stefan Glerum

on the subject of vinyl rcords, i thought i’d point out this series of delightful illustrations by an illustrator named stefan glerum. there are a whole bunch of really cool drawings about the evils of vinyl record collecting, and they’ve got great style. check this guy out.

Nylvi

this will be just a quick blurb because i really need to catch up on some stuff.
anyway, nylvi is this little blog that found me on twitter, so i checked it out, and it looks good. it’s a blog all about vinyl records, and it’s well done. simple, but all the images and videos are great. it’s actually more than a blog because they’re trying to expand their site to a marketplace where people can buy and sell vinyl records.
it looks super hip, and you’ve never heard of it, so i encourage you to check it out.
i promise i’ll get back on this more this week and weekend (i hope) and bring you fresh hipness. keep checking back.

San-Serif Shirt

i have never seen anything from Target that i actually like as much as this new shirt they’ve got. it’s got a bunch of san-serif typefaces all over it, and it actually looks decent. 20 bucks for you cheapskate typo fans out there, but i might get one myself. check it out on the target website.

The Anthem

i just wanted to do a small write up about these guys, because i think you’ll hear about them later.
there’s rarely a hip hop artist that i actually enjoy, probably because i’m sick of hearing about how many bitches and hoes you’ve got. but when a rapper comes along who actually has some style and knows how to use a dub, i listen up.
this song kind of reminds me of kanye’s first hit, Jesus Walks. it’s got that same gospel sound dubbed under the rapper, and dude’s got flow.

the anthem – the mighty underdogs
like i said. you’ll hear about them when their new album drops sometime in october. keep an eye out, and don’t say i didn’t warn you.

Colab Eyewear

this is my favorite statement that has been made about any line of fashion eyewear:
With ‘no rules to follow’ and ‘no target market to appease’, Colab are hoping to push the boundries of fashion design as they take on mass-produced collections from global clothing brands.
that has been the methodology of this blog, and my methodology in general. when that methodology is brought into the world of eyewear, you get Colab Eyewear’s newest line of sunglasses.
a bunch of artists from all over came together to design a line of sunglasses that say “we don’t even follow our own rules” and i can dig it. check them out on the website.

Rory Tyer Band

a few weeks ago i made a weekend trip up to lynchburg, VA, to my alma mater to visit my buddies from school. it was such a great time, and to top off the whole weekend, i got to go to a CD release party for one of my friends, rory tyer. rory has been playing in a band for a while now with his friends jason cizdziel on drums, and patrick rush on cello. these three elements, combined with an occasional piano riff make this new self-titled CD a magical piece of music.
i have a few friends who are musicians. the problem with that is that i feel obligated to listen to their music. rory is one of the few friends whose music i listen to because it’s actually good, not because he’s my friend. that’s why i need to recommend his album to you. it’s one of those albums where i actually like more than 3 tracks, so it was kind of hard to pick one, but here is one of my favorites for you to sample.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
mountains rise – rory tyer band
he’s such a great story teller, and this is such a great story, very moving.
i wish i could have posted about rory sooner, but he just released his album on iTunes, and i wanted to wait for that so you could check it out there.
i guarantee you’ll love it, or your money back. from iTunes. not from rory… or me.

New Zune Originals

as much as i hate Microsoft and everything they stand for, i can’t help but admire the pretty little zune every time i see it. they’ve got great colors, and to be completely honest, i actually like the menu design better than the menu on the ipod, but don’t let that go to your head, zune.
that being said, i’d like to have a discussion about design.
design is made better by subtracting, made worse by adding, and the zune is an perfect example of the latter. there is no reason that it should have up, down, left and right clicking buttons, and still two more for back and play.
if the designers of the zune actually spent some time thinking about their work, they would have adapted the already streamlined user interface to work intuitively with the navigation. instead, they gave up on dual functionality, and just added two more buttons for the things they couldn’t figure out. quite a cop out.
it just makes the device clunky, and for design idealists like me, repulsive.
despite these things, i do enjoy the zune artist series, and they just came out with a brand new line, including work from Tado, which is great. so great, that if Microsoft hadn’t made their zune software proprietary to PC’s (a real frickin’ genius move… idiots) i might actually consider getting a zune.
anyway, go check out the new series, and if you want to prove me wrong about the zune, by all means, comment, or better yet, send me one to play with.
if the zune could sway me from my fanboy-ism, Microsoft would have better advertising than money could buy. the problem is, they spend more money trying to convince us that Microsoft is the better product than they do actually designing better products. you got it backwards, Microsoft!
anyway, i didn’t mean for this to become an essay on the evils of Microsoft, but for the zune to be featured on Hipster Collective means that i need to tell you what i really think. honest blog, remember?
