Spheres of Fury
This is a beautiful and fun short film by Tim Brown and Christopher Hewitt. It is based on the style of 80’s war films, so Brown and Hewitt tried to capture some of that energy and attitude, but with a modern twist.
It was shot on a Canon D7, the upgrade from the 5D. It shoots 80 frames a second.

Ella Collinge

Ella Collinge is a recent graduate from Kingston University, currently living and working in London. I saw her work over on Nerdski. Every piece is spot on, but this lino print poster caught my eye because I love seeing the old-style printing process, and the final product is just so beautifully executed.
You can check out more of her work here.

Cass Art Kids

Pentagram has recently designed a great piece to promote the new children’s space in Cass Art’s flagship store in Islington. It’s an activity and coloring book that encourages kids to develop their imagination and problem-solving skills. What I like about it is that it’s not simply a coloring book to help kids zone out when they’re bored, but it actually encourages them to engage their brain and develop creative thinking skills.
You can see more pages from book over at Pentagram’s blog.

Color.NOISE
This is a really well done video by some guy named Andrew Morev.
It’s totally pointless, but it’s a cool experiment. Check out his website for more.

CXXVI
CXXVI is a tshirt company based out of New York made up of two guys, Matt Gorton and Jon Contino, and they’ve got a really great new nautical-inspired fall collection.
Gorton and Contino are free-thinkers who have an eye for great design and style. By day, they’re a design studio called Onetwentysix, but in their spare time, they’re filling orders for CXXVI.
What sets these guys apart is that each shirt is hand-printed, individually hand numbered and made of soft 100% combed cotton. It’s like they say: the devil really is in the details, and this brand pays attention to that. CXXVI has this working-class feel to it, reminiscent of a time when things were hand made and then wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string.
You can check out the line here, an interview with the creators over on Limited Hype, and also check out the Onetwentysix design studio.

The Swell Season

The Swell Season was formed as a result of a collaboration between Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, the stars of Once, which featured some of their music. They did work on the I’m Not There soundtrack as well. In 2006, they came out with their first LP together, and following the huge success of the film, toured the US. Today they released their brand new LP, titled Strict Joy, and it’s a well rounded collection that spans the entire spectrum between upbeat folk to whispser-soft lullaby… almost the same sort of feel as a Ray Lamontagne or Damien Rice album.
Here are two of my favorite tracks for you to peep:

In These Arms – The Swell Season
This is a perfect album for those cold nights where you’re curled up with your favorite pajamas, a great book and a hot cup of tea. It almost feels like a book itself, the way it carries you from beginning to end with a dynamic range of style, while still keeping the same storyline throughout.
Go check it out on iTunes, and here’s a great idea for a movie night.

Vintage Audio Equipment

Nick Maggio of A Time To Get has compiled these photos of vintage audio equipment, and it proves without a doubt that it’s true what they say: they don’t make ‘em like they used to. Something about the combination of wood, chrome and LCD is both sleek and romantic. I always love sliding a vinyl out of that 12″ piece of art, sliding it on the turntable, and dropping the needle to hear every minute detail of music, along with that lovable hiss and pop; made possible through the nostalgic beauty of my record player. It never fails to provide inspiration.
You can check out the photos here, and go listen to a vinyl. It’s good for you.
