Lost Things

I really like this video for A Fine Frenzy’s song Lost Things posted by Marylou Mendez on the Hipster Collective Facebook page. It perfectly matches the style of her music, and while it’s a really simple concept, I think it has a great story and perfect execution.

Thanks to Marylou for sharing!

This Too Shall Pass (RGM Version)

You thought the video for Ok Go’s song This Too Shall Pass was good? It’s nothing compared to this Rube Goldberg Machine version.

We’ve all see stuff like this before… but I’ve never seen one this extensive before. I can only imagine the painstaking hours spent just trying to get one solid take. Not to mention all that went into planning it and setting it up. There’s tons of crazy stuff going on… stuff I’ve never seen before. It’s probably the coolest RGM video I’ve ever seen, apart from the (of course) great music.

Thanks to Lisa Bengs for posting this on the HC facebook page.
I hope she doesn’t mind me posting her picture up here…
I thought it was pretty cool, and she’s kinda cute too. Go add her as a friend for being so cool.

Marching Through Your Head

The backing band for Broken Social Scene, Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson, released their first full-length project this month. ‘Say Us’ is the debut album from their personal project, Zeus. Their first exposure ‘Sounds Like Zeus’ EP, was released last June. Both projects are definitely worth a listen.

Directed by Alan Poon and Adam Makarenko, this video is clever and pretty dang visually pleasing. I love how it combines the stylized forest set and props with the climbing of Mount Olympus in search of the mythological king of the gods, Zeus. The organic color scheme and warm lighting seem fitting as spring rapidly approaches. This video makes me want to strap on some worn out leather boots and climb a snow-capped mountain with my buddies; with or without the Greek thunder god waiting at the peak.

Poon and Makarenko utilized multiple formats, but mainly the Canon 5D MkII.

Mumford & Sons

It’s been a while since I made a music recommendation, so I went through my “Recently Added” playlist in iTunes and found this little number.

To me, it has sort of a Fleet Foxes/Great Lake Swimmers feel to it, but iTunes is comparing it to The Low Anthem, Noah and the Whale, and The xx. So if you like any of those bands, or just like some good old folk that will keep you guessing, this band is for you. Here, check out some songs!

Those are two of my favorites from the album… but it was hard to find two to feature because the whole thing is pretty much all around solid.

The album is called Sigh No More and it just came out in the US. Go check it out on iTunes or Amazon.

Help Me! Help Me! EP

Help Me! Help Me! is the name of Lucy Schwartz’s new EP, which comes out on January 26th. I’ve been listening to it non-stop since I got the pre-release a few days ago, and I thinking I’m becoming a huge Lucy Schwartz fan. She’s just got this really carefree element to her music that makes her so cool without even trying. She also knows how to bring it back to basics with a solid but soothing ballad.

Here are a couple of my favorite tracks from the EP:

There’s also a nicely done cover of Respect by Aretha Franklin. You should definitely keep an eye out for this EP, as well as an exciting surprise concerning the new EP and Hipster Collective in the future.

Balmorhea

I found this album on my good buddy Jud’s ipod which he conveniently left in my car “by accident” and I can’t stop listening to it. The album is called All is Wild, All is Silent by the band Balmorhea. Once you get past the fact that their name sounds like a venereal disease, the album is pure gold. I would recommend this album to fans of Explosions in the Sky, because they’ve got the same sort of gig going.
Here are a few of my favorite tracks:

Contra

This is just a quick heads up, but for all you Vampire Weekend fans out there, they’re now streaming their whole album prior to the January 12th release. What I’ve heard so far sounds similar enough to their debut album that fans will enjoy it, but it’s enough of a progression to stay interesting. California English sounds almost like an Animal Collective remix. I’m really excited for the new album, and it sounds like it’s going to be pretty good.

They also just announced their tour dates, so be sure to check those out as well.

Go check out the Vampire Weekend website to listen, or pre-order the album on iTunes.
