Iverlicious’ video description is as follows, “4AD and Jagjaguwar have collaborated on a live session that captures a truly unique Bon Iver performance, featuring Justin Vernon and Sean Carey. On recent tours fans will have become accustomed to seeing Vernon flanked by an eleven-piece band, with the swell in numbers lending a grandiose element to even his most delicate songs. Sidestepping expectations, the idea Vernon presented for this session was to provide a wildly different experience.
“4AD and Jagjaguwar have collaborated on a live session that captures a truly unique Bon Iver performance, featuring Justin Vernon and Sean Carey. On recent tours fans will have become accustomed to seeing Vernon flanked by an eleven-piece band, with the swell in numbers lending a grandiose element to even his most delicate songs. Sidestepping expectations, the idea Vernon presented for this session was to provide a wildly different experience.

Recorded in AIR Studio’s Lyndurst Hall – a building that was originally a church and missionary school designed in 1880 by the great Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse (designer of the Natural History Museum) – Vernon was joined only by Carey, with the pair positioning themselves opposite one another at two grand pianos. Although neither Justin nor Sean’s first instrument is piano, they were able to remodel the songs in a way that showcases their complimentary vocals and, perhaps more strikingly, a seemingly effortless ability to experiment with form and structure.

As such, fans are treated to jaw-dropping interpretations of several songs from both the new album and the ‘Blood Bank’ EP, as well as a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. And interpretation is an apt word, as these songs are artfully abstracted from their original incarnations. Rather than layer the sound as on ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’, the focus is on paring back, in part evoking the minimalist approach of contemporary classical music, while remaining true enough to the source material to retain those elements characteristic of Bon Iver.

As on “Babys” and “Hinnom, TX”, Vernon’s trademark falsetto is positioned centre stage, framed by subtle and unexpected instrumental flourishes that render the performance simultaneously weighty and airless. It’s quite an achievement that songs so widely-known and loved in their recorded form are able gain in emotional impact, and stands as testament to Bon Iver’s singular talent.”

Live happily,
Many of you already know about Bon Iver… what kind of blog would this be if my readers didn’t already know about Bon Iver?
For many of us, Justin Vernon’s sweet falsetto marked a specific time in our lives. For me it was the winter of 2008. It was the sound of a late night, freezing wind howling outside the window, but Vernon’s spine tingling voice stained by months spent in the woods alone was even warmer than the coffee and book I held in my hand. Something about the simplicity of a single out of tune guitar and Vernon’s sorrow-filled tones made me believe that if I had been patient, kind, and balanced; then skinny love really would last the year. And a Good Winter it was.

It’s no mystery that his self-titled sophomore release has jumped once again to the top of my most-played list; this time with much more complex lines… scattered percussion and haphazard chirps like a chaotic wood, still managing to sing its hushed tones in unison. This new album is littered with detail in every moment of every lyric for miles, miles, miles, finally coming to rest on the last track; harkening back to the early 90′s ballad you slow-danced to at the prom, with its synth keyboard and tongue-in-cheek saxophone.

This album has all the same addictive ingredients as Vernon’s previous work, but somehow still preserves the sentimental value we found in For Emma. It’s the work of a man who has a burdened past, but has progressed forward into a promising future, and it certainly does not disappoint. (I’ll not speak to his involvement with Kanye, however progressive it may be)

For those of you who haven’t heard the new album, or for those of you who’d just like to take a moment apart from yourself, here are two tracks from Bon Iver, and one from the Calgary EP; a Bonnie Raitt cover you might recognize from Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. If you feel so inclined, leave your thoughts on the new album here. I’ve heard polarized reviews, and I’d like to see what my readers feel about it.

It’s a great song with a great story, and the visual representation just makes it that much more beautiful.
This ragtag group of hipsters are known as Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and I’ve been jamming out to their song “Home” for the past few weeks. It’s got a really brave, pioneer feel to it that makes you want to explore new lands and conquer new territories. Go check out their album on iTunes (even though the art is terrible). It’s all great stuff that I think you might enjoy.
